Hello
I get such a buzz from tutoring.
As a trained teacher, in schools I know how hard it is for teachers to give each student in the class the full attention they need. Thats why I now prefer to focus on individual students so that I can work at the pace they need; accelerating when needed, or slowing down to focus on gaps in knowledge, to build both confidence and enjoyment in learning.
It is a privileged to work so closely with students, as I get to witness the precious "a-ha" moments when things all click into place. This is where there is joy in learning. I love the detective work in getting to know students' academic backgrounds, and having the time to work at the student's pace to make a meaningful difference to them.
As a student, I discovered how to learn effectively with dyslexia; playing to my strengths using numbers and pictures rather than words. I studied Physics at university, then worked in hospitals doing Medical Physics. I liked the parts of the job where I got to be an inventor, but missed working with people more directly, so trained as a teacher.
Teaching in schools gave me valuable experience, but now I enjoy having the opportunity to work at the student's pace to develop deeper learning. Working as a tutor allows me the balance of working, while raising our two young children.
